The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program provides settlement support and services for immigrants, refugees and newcomers. ?
After registering with our district, a settlement worker will contact newcomer families to help the student(s) and family adjust to school(s) and their new Ï㽶ֱ²¥ community.?
Our team helps newcomer families to build connections and provide support and guidance to independently access services and resources in Ï㽶ֱ²¥, such as:
- School system and education
- English Language Learner (ELL) support
- Canadian citizenship
- Housing and accommodation
- Transportation
- Heath services and wellbeing
- Financial services
- Legal supports and services

- Employment
- Early childhood education, childcare and youth services
- Parks and recreation
- Settlement counselling
- Support groups
- Conversation circles for adults and youth
Our team of settlement workers provide services in a variety of ways:
- One-to-one and family orientations
- Online and in-person information workshops
- Referrals and connections to community resources
- Community connection activities?and experiences
Our youth SWIS team works directly with secondary newcomer youth to help them transition successfully to their new setting by:?
- Providing opportunities and safe spaces for youth to participate in activities and develop social connections during and after school.?
- Supporting youth in developing confidence, personal and leadership skills to achieve their educational and employment goals.
Settlement services are provided in the following languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, French, Punjabi, Portuguese, Japanese, Tagalog, Spanish and Greek.
